PASUNDAN EKSPRES – Toyota Motor Corp. is currently conducting trials of hydrogen-powered vehicles in Australia, marking the Japanese automaker’s first venture into testing environmentally friendly cars for commercial use on public roads.

During the trial period from late October to January, a specially modified van from Toyota’s HiAce series is being utilized by local construction and security companies to ensure the vehicle’s performance and resilience on the roads in the outskirts of Melbourne.

Toyota is taking this initiative as part of a broader effort to promote hydrogen as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Earlier in May.

Toyota made history by entering a liquid hydrogen-powered car in a 24-hour endurance race in central Japan, making it the first car of its kind to participate in an official race worldwide.

In a press statement, Toyota explained that the testing of the HiAce vehicle using hydrogen gas in Australia aims to further refine hydrogen engine technology developed through motorsports, bringing it closer to practical implementation.

Fuel cell hydrogen-powered vehicles already in commercial use are propelled by electric motors, while hydrogen engine cars are seen as advantageous due to their shared components with gasoline-powered vehicles.

Australia, rich in hydrogen resources, has been actively embracing and utilizing this energy source, as reported by Kyodo on Saturday (11/11).
